Remove text from an image in GIMP

GIMP can remove text. The Heal and Clone tools are honest about what they do: they copy nearby pixels onto the lettering. On a soft gradient or a flat sky they are fine. On a patterned shirt, brick, wood grain, or a busy product label they turn into a soft scar — especially when the caption has a shadow or stroke.

That is not a failure of GIMP. It is the wrong job for a general patcher. Readable words have hard edges and anti-aliased fringes; cloning neighbours does not “know” it is looking at a word. Specialised text erase does that job in a few seconds and leaves finishing to GIMP if you still want it.

The manual path (when it is worth it)

1. Duplicate the layer so you can always revert.
2. Select the text loosely (Rectangle or Free Select), then Grow a few pixels so you catch AA fringes.
3. Heal Tool for tiny date stamps on a quiet plate; Clone Tool when you need a clear source patch of matching texture.
4. Work at 100% and walk the edge. Soft mush along the outline is where manual work usually shows.
5. If a faint ghost of the letter remains, sample again from a cleaner neighbour — do not keep smudging the same patch.

When manual work stops paying off

• The caption is readable and sits on fabric, brick, foliage, or print texture.
• Glow, thick stroke, or drop shadow surrounds the type.
• You are past about twenty minutes on one string and still seeing a blotch at 100%.
• You have a folder of similar frames, not a single stamp.

Export that frame (PNG or high-quality JPEG) and run it through EraseText. All text clears every string; Select text erases only the boxes you choose, or keeps selected strings and erases the rest. Brush erase is for a stubborn stamp detection missed — paint the region. After All text, restore-brush original pixels back if the pass went slightly too far.

Bring the clean plate back into GIMP

Open the erased result as a new layer or replace the working layer. Colour grade, crop, and sharpen here if you need to — the expensive rebuild is already done. Neighbours and unmarked areas should still match the original; if something softened that should have stayed, shrink what you asked EraseText to clear next time (Select or Brush) rather than healing the whole frame again.

Keep GIMP for tiny marks on quiet plates and for files that must never leave your machine. Use EraseText when the lettering is the main problem and the background has to survive. Try one stubborn caption both ways; keep the plate that still looks like the same photograph at 100%.
